What is a high efficiency gas fire?

A gas fire is just a gas fire, right?! Wrong.

In recent years manufacturers of fires have recognised the need to develop gas fires which are far more energy efficient, which has resulted in the launch of what are called (rather predictably), ‘high efficiency gas fires’.

High efficiency gas fires can boast an efficiency rating of as much as 90%. This means that of all the gas that is fed into the fire, 90% of it is converted into heat for your living room. That means only 10% of the gas energy is ‘wasted’.

This compares very favourably to older gas fires that would sometimes only be around 50% efficient.

How do you calculate the efficiency of a fireplace?

It’s generally a fairly straightforward process to work out the efficiency of a gas fireplace.

You simply need to know the amount of energy that a fire requires as an input, and the fire’s subsequent output. These inputs and outputs are normally given in kilowatts (kW).

Once you have these figures, you simply need to divide them, multiply the resulting figure by 100, and you’ll have the efficiency percentage of the fire.
